sampling Flashcards
(13 cards)
what is sampling?
a smaller subgroup drawn from the larger group that is being researched
what is the purpose of sampling?
the individuals which are chosen for the study represent the wider population of the research population.
why do positivist like sampling?
it created generalizable statements about the social structure which is being researched
what is a sampling frame?
a list of all members of the research population
what are the sampling techniques which are representive of CAGE?
-random sampling
-stratified sampling [the most representive sampling technique]
-systematic sampling
what are the non-representive sampling techniques
-snowball sampling
-opportunity sampling
what is random sampling?
a sample which is chosen by chance which allows for everyone to have an equal chance and allows for a larger sample size which is represnetive of CAGE
what is stratified sampling?
the use of breaking down the population into subcategories which creates proportions of each group. [this requires a lot of data] it is the most represtive type of sampling
what is systematic sampling?
through using equations such as the Nth term to choose participants
this technique was used by Willmot and Young
what is snowball sampling?
collecting of samaples through contacting individuals of the researches choosing and asking for their recommendations on who else to include within the study.
what is opportunity sampling?
choosing individuals who are easy to access for the study
which sampling techniques do positivist use?
representive techniques such as
-random
-stratified
-systematic
which sampling techniques do interpretivists use?
non-representive techniques such as
-snowball
-opportunity
