Kr.s.n.a
etymologised by ancient sages and grammarians as a combination of two semantic elements
kr.s. meaning “to attract”
Like the word traction or tractor
Indians know the word krishi in agriculture means plowing by pulling
in English think of the relationship between the word traction like a tractor and attraction or when there is a car accident and in the hospital they put the patient in “traction” to pull on the bones and straighten out the spinal vertabrea.
why would word for traction be so related to attraction ?
So in Sanskrit something is called attractive when it literally pulls the mind
And the combination with NA
Sanskrit root na means pleasure
like the word “ananta” in yoga
The sages, grammarians, and acaryas or recognised teachers have said that God in the word Krishna is he source of all pleasure and is infinitely attractive.
This is a very positive God. A God that is infinitely beautiful and attractive and infinitely supplies pleasure. There is no conception here of an angry or jealous God who needs therapy or anger management classes.
rāma
also defined as the source of spiritual happiness
the idea is that if you seek ultimate satisfaction from a finite object then your ultimate satisfaction will end up being finite.
Doesn’t mean that our human relationships have to be dropped. It just means that if our human relationships are focused on the infinite source of pleasure then even our human relationships become unlimited.
nātha
lord in the sense of protector, refuge, gaurdian
the person who really takes care of you, protects you
anātha - when Krishna left dwarka the citizens said “when you left we were anātha - we had no one to look after us.”
