what is sarcoptic mange
A
a skin condition caused by burrowing mites (sarcoptes scabiei)

symptoms of sarcoptic mange
A
- dry lesions
- wounds on lips + nose then head + neck + genetalia
- thick skin
- alopecia
- excessive scratching + licking
- crusts + scales
- red patching
- wrinkling skin
- anemia + leukopenia ( decrease in white blood cells) → in severe cases

diagnosis methods for sarcoptic mange
A
- tape method
- vaccum aspiration (microscope)
- skin scrape (microscope)
- biopsy

treatment for sarcoptic mange
A
- ivermectin injection (1-4 courses, 14 days apart)
- benzyl benzoate → topical cream (treats wounds + kills mites)
- spot on treatment (advantage for large rabbits) → covers mites, ticks + fleas
- blood transfusion
- can take up to a month or more to treat
