Saureland Pre-Lab #1 Flashcards
(25 cards)
What makes up the skull?
the cranium–8 bones
facial bones–14 bones
What is the fcn of the cranium?
to lodge & protect the brain
What is a LeFort fracture?
traumatic separation of bones of cranium & facial bones
What are the 8 bones of the cranium?
1 frontal 2 parietal 1 occipital 2 temporal 1 sphenoid 1 ethmoid
What does the sphenoid bone look like?
butterfly shaped
can be partially seen in the orbit & near the temporal bone
Air cells are found in which bone?
ethmoid bone
What are the 14 facial bones?
2 nasal bones 2 maxillary bones 2 palatine bones 2 inferior nasal concha 1 vomer 2 lacrimal bones 2 zygomatic bones 1 mandible
What are the total # of bones in the skull? What does this number become if you add the bilateral auditory ossicles?
Skull–22 bones
Total–28 bones
T/F The mandible is involved in Le Fort Fractures
False.
T/F The bones of the orbit include both cranial & facial bones.
True.
Which types of Le Fort fractures are considered partial?
Type I & II
Which types of Le Fort fractures are considered complete dysjunction?
Type III
What does Type I & II Le Fort Fractures look like?
Type I: horizontal fracture of the maxilla
Type II: pyramidal shaped
What is the fracture path of the Type III Le Fort fracture?
extends thru the wings of the sphenoid bone. It often fractures the zygomatic bones & arches.
Which bones of the newborn calvaria are thin & pliable?
Frontal, parietal & occipital bones
What are the sutures of the newborn calvaria?
sagittal, coronal, lambdoid
What is the Galea aponeurotica?
it is a tendinous sheath that goes over the calvaria b/w the frontalis & occipitalis muscles.
What is Caput succedaneum?
severe edema as a result of birth passage. This is above the galea & below the skin.
Subgaleal hemorrhage–where is this found?
This is deep to the galea
What’s the deal w/ Cephalhematoma?
This bleeding occurs & lifts the periosteum up too! Almost all the layers lifted up, except the bone itself
**with this one you can injure the sutures b/c it occurs below the periosteum
What can give you spastic diplegia?
an intracranial hemorrhage (plial hemorrhage)
Does real damage happen w/ a Depressed Ping Pong Fracture?
no, but it looks bad.
Parotitis–what is this? What causes this?
infection of the parotid gland
**caused by calculus or mumps
An ascending infection that goes into the parotid gland is called what?
terminal parotitis
