SB1 Flashcards
cells - Eukaryotic & Prokaryotic etc. (26 cards)
What is a cell?
The basic structural and functional unit of all organisms
What is an organelle?
Tiny structures inside a cell with a specific function
What are the 2 types of cells. Compare.
The 2 types of cells are Eukaryotic and Prokaryotic. Eukaryotic cells have a nucleus, while Prokaryotic do not have a nucleus. Eukaryotic cells are in multicellular organisms while Prokayotic cells are in unicellular organisms. Eukaryotes are complex with many subcellular structures called organelles Prokaryotes are simple, with a few.
What are some examples of a Eukaryotic cell
Plant cells
Animal cells
Fungi
Are Viruses Eukaryotes or Prokaryotes
They are neither as they have no cells
List some features of a cell membrane
partially permeable
controls what enters and leaves the cell
List some features of the cytoplasm
jelly -like substance
where chemical reactions take place
List some features of a nucleus
contains chromosomes
diploid (only haploid in either an egg cell or a sperm cell)
controls cell activities
List the features of a Mitochondria
powerhouse of the cell
gives the cell energy
site of aerobic respiration
list the features of a ribosome
site of protein synthesis
list the features of a vacuole
stores water and cell sap( sugar , water , waste , )
List the features of a cell wall
supports and strengthens the cell
fully permeable
gives the cell its shape
list the features of a chloroplast
contains chlorophyll
site of photosynthesis
What are the vessels used to transport water in plants
Xylem
Adaptations of Xylem
strengthened with lignin rings
made of dead cells
have tubes and are porous so that water can easily go through
Prokaryotic cells what are bacterial cell
They are prokaryotic cell without A nucleus simple structures and a few organelles
What is a cell wall made of
It is made of peptidoglycan
Describe the singular circular strand of DNA in bacterial cells
It has no nucleus and floats freely in the cytoplasm
What is the difference between ribosomes in animal cells and bacterial cells
The ribosomes in bacterial cells are smaller than those in eukaryotes
What are plasmids
They are extra circular loops of DNA which carry beneficial gene
Why do some bacterial cells have a flagellum
For extra movement
What is the capsule
It is an extra protective outer layer in some bacterial cells
Compare a bacteria cell and Animal cell
A bacterial cell has no nucleus while and Animal cell has a nucleus. A bacteria has a singular stand of DNA floating freely while DNA is stored in the nucleus in animal cell. Some bacteria have a capsule while all animal cells have no capsule and the most outer layer is cell membrane. Some bacteria have a flagellum, while no animal cells have one. Bacteria Cells have a flexible cell wall while no animal cells have a cell wall. Bacteria cells are prokaryotic while animal cells are Eukaryotic. Bacteria cells have smaller ribosome while animal cells have longer ribosome. Bacteria cells have few cellular structures while animal cells have many
List some similarities of bacterial cells and animal cells
Both have a ribosome both have cell membrane both have cytoplasm both have DNA
