SB4d Flashcards
(18 cards)
What are the 3 domains of classification?
- Bacteria
- Archaea
- Eukarya
a. Animals
b. Plants
c. Fungi
d. Some protoctista
How do we represent the 3-domain system of classification?
Check teacher notes page 10 ‘Classification’ diagram.
What are the 7 groups of classification?
- Kingdom
- Phylum
- Class
- Order
- Family
- Genus
- Species
How can we recognise the genus of an organism?
First letter is always capital and the word is written in italics.
How can we recognise the species of an organism?
First letter is always lowercase and the word is written in italics.
What are the 5 different kingdoms and their characteristics?
- Animals
- Plants
- Fungi
- Protists
- Prokaryotes
Check teacher notes page 11 ‘Classification’ table for characteristics.
What are the characteristics of organisms in the animal kingdom?
- Multicellular
- Eukaryotic cells
- No cell walls
What are the characteristics of organisms in the plant kingdom?
- Multicellular
- Chloroplasts for photosynthesis
- Eukaryotic cells
- Cellulose cell walls
What are the characteristics of organisms in the fungi kingdom?
- Multicellular (except yeasts)
- Live in/on dead matter which they feed on
- Eukaryotic cells
- Chitin cell walls
What are the characteristics of organisms in the protist kingdom?
- Mostly unicellular
- Eukaryotic cells
- Some have cell walls (made of different substances but not chitin)
What are the characteristics of organisms in the prokaryote kingdom?
- Unicellular
- Prokaryotic cells
- Flexible peptidoglycan cell walls
How can we tell two organisms are closely related?
- Common DNA - the more common DNA they have the more closely related they are
- They belong in the same genus
- Genetic analysis - analysis of DNA of organisms in order to determine which classification group they belong in
What are the 5 classes in the Linnaean system of classification?
- Mammals
- Reptiles
- Amphibians
- Birds
- Fish
What are the characteristics of organisms in the mammal class?
- Warm-blooded
- Have hair/fur
- Breathe with lungs
- Give birth to live young
What are the characteristics of organisms in the reptile class?
- Cold-blooded
- Have dry scales
- Lay leathery eggs
What are the characteristics of organisms in the amphibian class?
- Cold-blooded
- Have soft permeable skin
- Lay eggs
What are the characteristics of organisms in the bird class?
- Warm-blooded
- Have feathers and a beak
- Many can fly
What are the characteristics of organisms in the fish class?
- Cold-blooded
- Breathe through gills
- Lay many eggs
