SC1 Flashcards
(6 cards)
What are the three states of matter?
- Solid
- Liquid
- Gas
What is the arrangement and movement of particles for each state of matter?
Gas:
- Random and far apart
- Fast in all directions
Liquid:
- Random and close together
- Move around each other
Solid:
- Regular and close together
- Vibrate about fixed positions
Check book diagram B page 2.
What type of changes are state changes?
Physical changes.
What are physical changes?
Changes that can be reversed and the chemical properties of the substance do not change.
Why are state changes physical changes?
The particles themselves do not change - only their arrangement, movement and amount of stored energy.
What are all the names of the interconversions between the three states of matter?
Solid –> liquid: melting
Liquid –> gas: evaporation and boiling
Gas –> liquid: condensing
Liquid –> solid: freezing
Solid –> gas: sublimation
Gas –> solid: deposition
