What does SCBA stand for?
Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus
When should SCBA be worn?
Any time there is a threat or potential threat of a contaminated atmosphere.
What is the main purpose of SCBA?
To protect firefighters from inhaling toxic or harmful substances.
What are the four breathing techniques?
Skip breathing, Box breathing, Reilly Emergency Breathing Technique, Straw breathing.
What is the emergency breathing technique called Wheel Breathing?
A technique used to conserve air in low supply by turning the cylinder valve off and on with each breath.
What are the 10 main components of the MSA G1 SCBA?
Facepiece, Regulator, HUD, Cylinder/Control Valve, Pressure Reducer, Control Module, Power Module, Harness/Carrier Assembly, Speaker Module, Quick-fill Pouch.
What is the function of the PASS device?
Activates an alarm when motionless for 30 seconds, monitors pressure and battery status.
What is the purpose of the HUD in SCBA?
Displays cylinder pressure and alarm status through LEDs inside the facepiece.
What does the power module do?
Supplies power and handles alarms and buddy lights.
What is the Universal Air Connection (UAC)?
Allows emergency transfill of air from one SCBA to another.
What are the 3 Pre-Entry Safety Checks?
Tug Test, Bypass Check, Negative Pressure Check.
What symptoms indicate the need to leave a contaminated area?
Difficulty breathing, dizziness, taste/smell contaminants, nose/throat irritation.
At what cylinder pressure should a firefighter exit the hazardous atmosphere?
Before low air warning at 33% (approx. 1575 psi).
How often should the SCBA be inspected?
Daily, after each use, and when necessary.
What are signs of heat exhaustion while wearing SCBA?
Fatigue, weakness, tachycardia, nausea, vomiting, and profuse sweating.
