Procedure of Their Study

A

Involved 60 babies. All from Glasgow. They visited the homes of these parents for the first year and then 18 months again. They asked the parents if their children showed any signs of separation anxiety when they were separated from the caregiver. They also assessed for stranger anxiety

Findings

A

25-32 weeks of age 50% of the babies showed separation anxiety to their primary caregiver (mother). They called this specific attachment. This attachment was formed with the parent that was most interactive with the child (reciprocity).

40 weeks- 80% had specific attachment and 30% showed multiple attachment

A

baby is recognising and forming bonds with its carers. Show preference towards a particular adult Happier in the presence of others

Indiscriminate stage

A

2-7 months babies show preference for familiar adults they recognise. Comforted by any adult (no stranger anxiety)

A

7 Months- Baby tends to show stranger anxiety and separation anxiety when they are not with the primary attachment figure.

Multiple attachment

A

Shortly after forming specific attachments they Tend to form secondary attachments and they extend these attachment behaviours from one adult to the other. Depends on how much time the other parent spends with the child
