Classification of Schizophrenia - Criteria A
2+ of these symptoms present for significant portion of 1 month period. At least one should be an active symptom, (1-3)
1) delusions
2)hallucinations
3) disorganised speech
4) grossly disorganised behaviour
5) negative symptoms (e.g diminished emotional expression or avolition)
Classification of Schizophrenia - Criteria B
reduction in 1+ major areas of functioning
Classification of Schizophrenia - Criteria c
continuous signs of disturbance for 6+ months, at least 1 month active symptoms
Type 1 - positive symptoms
-> any behavioural excess
- hallucinations
- delusions of persecutions
- delusions of grandeur
Type 2 - negative symptoms
-> any behavioural deficit
- speech poverty (Alogia)
- avolition
Hallucinations
Unusual sensory experiences, typically hearing voices
Could be critical, bewaring of danger, give orders
Delusions
Irrational beliefs with no basis in reality
Makes sense to them but bizarre to others
Persecution (spied on)
Grandeur (important figure)
Speech Poverty
Decreased fluency, produce fewer words in given time in fluency tasks
->difficulty spontaneously producing them
Avolition
Reduced interests, inability to persist at goal behaviour
Reduction in self initiated involvement e.g can’t make decisions
