- While Schleicher failed to form a stable government, Papen began plotting with Hitler.
- Papen and other conservatives thought they could “control” Hitler by making him Chancellor and themselves key cabinet members.
- Papen convinced Hindenburg to dismiss Schleicher and appoint Hitler instead.
- 30 January 1933: Hitler was appointed Chancellor. Papen was Vice-Chancellor. Only 3 Nazis in the cabinet.

- Schleicher was murdered during the Night of the Long Knives (30 June 1934), as Hitler eliminated rivals and threats to his power.
-His death symbolised the end of the old conservative elite’s influence.
