Science 1/23/24 Flashcards
(7 cards)
what is binary fission?
When single parent cell doubles in DNA, then divides into 2 cells. Usually ocurs in bacteria.(asexuall)
What is budding
Small growth on the surface of the parent breaks off, resulting in the formation of 2 individuals. Occurs in yeast and some anymals(asexuall)
What is fragmentation?
Organisms break into two or more fragments that develop into a new individual. Occurs in many plants, as well as some animals (like coral, sponges, and starfish). (asexuall)
How does sexually reproduction in plants occur?
Sexual reproduction in plants occurs when a sperm cell (pollen) unites with an egg cell in a process called pollination.
How does sexually reproduction in animals occur?
Involves the merging of genetic material carried by the sperm and egg cell. When the sperm cell and egg cell fuse together and join their genetic material it creates a zygote or fertilized egg cell which will then divide and ultimately become a full grown organism.
What is the advantage and disadvantage of sexual reproduction?
Advantage-allowsfor varietion
disadvantage-takes long time
What is the advantage and disadvantage of asexual reproduction
Advantage-occurs quickly
disadvantage-more susceptible to disease
