Science Flashcards
Study (13 cards)
Which layer is liquid? Outer Core. How is this known?
S- waves are not recording on the other
side of earth. S-waves cannot travel through liquids. Therefore, the Outer Core is
liquid.
The Earth’s magnetic field protects us from harmful rays from the Sun. What causes
this magnetic field?
The interaction between the liquid outer core and the solid
inner core.
What causes the plates to move on Earth?
Convection currents in the mantle below.
Where do earthquakes and volcanoes most commonly occur?
At plate boundaries
Where are the biggest mountains in the world? Himalayas. What caused this formation?
Convergent plate boundaries, continental- continental.
What kind ofplate boundary is in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean?
Divergent plate boundary
Focus-
The location where the fault breaks
underground.
Epcienter-
location directly above the
focus on the surface of the Earth.
P-wave-
Primary wave, travels through solids
and liquids. The faster seismic wave, the first
to arrive.
S-wave-
Secondary wave, travels only through solids. The second wave to arrive.
Lag time-
Time difference between the P and S wave. This determines the distance
between seismic stations and epeicenters.
What are the 3 types of plate boundaries?
a. Convergent b. Divergent c. Transform
What does subduction mean?
When one plate (the denser one) go beneath the other plate in a convergent boundary collision.
Oceanic plates are always denser.
