SCIENCE Flashcards
(17 cards)
What is keratinization?
The process of cells moving upward inside the follicle, maturing and hardening as the cells lose their nuclei and perish.
What are keratinized proteins?
Mature keratin cells in the hair shaft that have grown away from their roots and have lost their nuclei.
What are amino acids?
Units that are joined together end to end by strong chemical peptide bonds to form polypeptide chains that comprise proteins.
What are the COHNS elements?
The major elements that make up human hair: carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, and sulfur.
What are peptides?
A chain of amino acids that are bonded together to make keratin protein for hair, nails, and body.
What are hydrogen bonds?
A type of side bond that accounts for one-third of the hair shaft’s resilience and fiber strength; they are weak and change easily when hair is shampooed or wet.
What is a salt bond?
A type of side bond that is temporary and is easily weakened by strong alkaline or acidic solutions.
What is grapeseed oil?
A by-product of pressing the seed for wine making; it is light, thin, colorless, and odorless, full of essential fatty acids.
What are the benefits of Grapeseed oil for hair?
Absorbs into the scalp, is great for hot-oil treatments, and reduces flaking caused by seborrheic dermatitis.
What is shea butter?
Contains vitamins A, E, F, and cinnamic acid; a thick butter that allows the scalp and hair to breathe without clogging pores.
What are the eight bones of the cranium?
- Occipital bone
- Parietal bones
- Frontal bone
- Temporal bones
- Ethmoid bone
- Sphenoid bone
What is the occipital bone?
The hindmost bone of the skull, below the parietal bones; forms the back of the skull above the nape.
What do the parietal bones form?
The sides and top of the cranium; there are two parietal bones.
What does the frontal bone form?
The forehead.
What do the temporal bones form?
The sides of the head in the ear region; there are two temporal bones.
What is the ethmoid bone?
A light, spongy bone between the eye sockets; forms part of the nasal cavities.
What is the sphenoid bone?
The bone that joins all the bones of the cranium together.
