Science Flashcards
(28 cards)
What is mass measured in?
Grams
Define atmosphere
The envelope of gasses surrounding the earth or another planet
What part of solar radiation gets trapped?
IR(infared)
What major gasses are present in the atmosphere?
Co2- cars, factories, cellular respiration Methane- cows Water vapor- volcanoes Cfs’s- old refrigerators
What gas plays the biggest role in global warming
Co2 because there is a lot of it
What is oceanography?
A branch of science that deals with the ocean
List the five major seas in order from biggest to smallest
Pacific Atlantic Indian Arctic Southern
How did the oceans form?
Earth formed on water is it it cooled down volcanoes steamed and that turned into water vapor
What percentage of Earth is water?
77% 3% fresh water, and most is ice
How did salt get in the ocean?
The breaking down of rocks
Explain the salinity in the Arctic
Low salinity except for under ice where it is high because it collects under rocks.
Name a problem divers face while diving
Nitrogen narcosis and decompression sickness
What causes current?
Wind
What is evidence for past climate change?
Ice cores Sediment cores Tree rings Coral cores
How does current effect the climate?
Water moves around holding its heat and as it moves heat is released.
What is the most reliable way of seeing past climate?
Ice cores because it tells you the relative amount of co2 in the atmosphere at the time
When and what was the “little ice age”?
Around 1600s and it was when Europe and North America experienced much colder winters than normal.
What is salinity? What’s the average?
The amount if salt in the water. The average in the ocean is 35ppi.
What is the last color to disappear in the water colum? First?
Last is purple First is red
What happens to pressure the deeper you go?
It increases
What is the zone called when the temperature starts to go down?
Thermocline or transition zone.
What does SONAR stand for?
Sound Navigation and Rangeing
What is the difference between surface and deep ocean currents?
Surface is warmer and moves faster while deep is cold and moves really slow.
Name a current in the North between Europe and the US.
Mid Atlantic current
