Science Flashcards
(38 cards)
What is decomposition?
A chemical reaction that breaks down compounds into simpler products.
What is a replacement reaction?
A reaction in which one element replaces another in a compound; or when two elements in different compounds trade places.
What is an exothermic reaction?
A chemical reaction that releases energy in the form of heat.
What is an endothermic reaction?
Chemical reaction that absorbs energy in the form of heat.
What is activation energy?
The minimal amount of energy that has to be added to get a chemical reaction to start.
What is the law of conservation of mass?
The principal stating that matter is not created or destroyed during a chemical reaction.
What is a reactant?
A substance that enters into a chemical reaction.
SUBSCRIPT
The number in the chemical formula that tells the number of atoms in a molecule or the ratio of elements in a compound.
COEFFICIENT
A number in front of a chemical formula in an equation that indicates how many molecules or atoms of each reactant and products are involved in a reaction.
PRECIPITATE
A solid that forms from a solution during a chemical reaction.
MOLECULE
The combination of two or more atoms.
CHEMICAL FORMULA
A combination of symbols that represent the elements in a compound.
CHEMICAL EQUATION
A short easy way to show chemical reactions, using symbols instead of words.
MIXTURE
Two or more substances that are mixed together but not chemically combined.
SOLUTION
A well mixed mixture
ELEMENT
A substance that cannot be broken down into any other substances by chemical or physical means.
COMPOUND
A substance made of two or more elements chemically combined in a specific ratio, or proportion.
CHEMICAL REACTION
The process in which substances undergo chemical changes that result in the formation of new substances.
What is solubility?
A measure of how well a solute can dissolve in a solvent
What is a suspension?
A mixture in which particles can be seen and easily separated by settling or filtration.
What is a concentrated solution?
A mixture that has a lot of solute dissolved in it.
What ions would you expect to find when a base dissolves in water?
Hydroxide ions
How may salt form?
Salt can be formed by the reaction between an acid and a base
What is carbon steel mostly used for?
Tools, machinery, rails
