Controlled variable
What does not change in the experiment (there can be lots of these in the experiment)
Independent Variable
What I change in the experiment (there can only be one of these in the experiment)
Dependent Variable
What I observe or measure in the experiment
Observation
Information obtained through the senses.
Volume
The amount of space an object takes up (measured in milliliters (mL))
Mass
the amount of matter in an object (measured in grams (g))
Inference
A conclusion reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning
Qualitative Observation
An observation that deals with characteristics that cannot be expressed in numbers.
Quantitative Observation
An observation that deals with a number or amount
Telescope
A device built to observe distant objects by making them appear closer
Meteor
A streak of light in the sky produced by the burning of a meteoroid in Earth’s atmosphere.
Galilelo Galilei
He made the first telescope.
Planet

Gravity
A force of attraction between objects that is due to their masses.
Gas giant planets
Large, gaseous planets that are very cold at their surfaces, have ring systems, many moons, and lack solid surfaces—Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.
Rocky/Terrestrial planets
- Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars
- Formed close to the sun
- Rocky planets
- Thin atmosphere
- Dense materials
Inner Planets
