Science 8 Flashcards
(20 cards)
The “brain” of the cell. It’s stores DNA and information required for cell division and growth
Nucleus
Contained within the nucleus. It helps make ribosomes.
Nucleolus
The smallest organelles. They help the cell make proteins.
Ribosomes
Sorts proteins and fats before delivering them to their next destination
Golgi Apparatus
A network of bubbles and tubes found near the nucleus. Can be covered in the ribosomes (rough) or not (smooth). It helps to modify and transport proteins.
Endoplasmic Reticulum
A barrier around the cell. It is semi-permeable , so only some things pass through. It controls what can and cannot enter the cell.
Cell Membrane
The “powerhouse” of the cell. Produces energy for the cell to survive and function. These organelles convert glucose (sugar we eat) into ATP (adenosin3 triphosphate), which is energy the cell can use.
Mitochondria
A gel-like substance that fills the cell. It provides support for internal structures. It contains all the organelles.
Cytoplasm
PLANT CELLS
Nutrients and food
Makes their own food
from photosynthesis
PLANT CELLS
Size and shape
Larger, rectangular
ANIMAL CELLS
Size and shape
Smaller,round
ANIMAL CELLS
Nutrients and food
Gets food by eating other organisms
PLANT CELLS
Cell wall
Gives the cell structure.
ANIMAL CELLS
Cell wall
No cell wall
PLANT CELLS
Chloroplast
Let’s the cell perform photosynthesis
ANIMAL CELLS
Chloroplast
No Chloroplast.
PLANT CELLS
Lysosome
No Lysosome
ANIMAL CELLS
Lysosome
Helps digest food and break down waste
PLANT CELLS
Vacuoles
One large vacuole
ANIMAL CELLS
Vacuoles
Several small vacuoles, store food, and nutrients
