Science Flashcards
(25 cards)
Push/pull
A force that moves an object away or towards another object
Friction
The force between two surfaces sliding over one another, that causes them to heat up and wear
Weight
The force that pulls objects towards the centre of the earth
Air resistance/drag
A force acting against any object that is moving through the Earth’s atmosphere
Lift
A force pushing upward on an object in a liquid
Upthrust
A force pushing upwards on an object
Thrust
A push caused by an engine
Elastic limit
The point beyond which a spring will not return to it’s original length when the force is removed
Field
A region where something feels force
mass
the amount of matter a thing is made up of
tension
A stretching force
Speed
Distance divided by time
Distance
Speed X time
Time
Distance divided by speed
Newton
The unit for measuring force
Lubrication
a substance that reduces friction when two surfaces rub together
Newton meter
A piece of equipment used to measure weight in Newtons
Non-contact force
A magnetic, electrostatic or gravitational force that acts between objects not in contact
Streamlined
Shaped to reduce water resistance (drag)
Unbalanced
Opposing forces on an object that are unequal
Density
The amount of partials in an object
Anomaly
A result that doesn’t fit the pattern or the trend
Line of best fit
A line that goes through the majority of the points, not the anomaly
Extension
The amount by which an object gets longer when a force is applied
