SCIENCE CHAPTER 2 STUDY GUIDE Flashcards
(29 cards)
What is the definition of dissolve?
Mixing 2 types of matter together to form a solution.
What is a solute?
The larger part of a solution OR the part of a solution in which the solvent dissolves into.
What is a solvent?
The smaller part of a solution OR the part of the solution that dissolves into the solute.
What does dissolving refer to?
Mixing completely from a solvent to a solution.
Define pollution.
Contaminants in the environment that can harm living things.
What does soluble mean?
Able to dissolve in a specified solvent.
What does insoluble mean?
Unable to be dissolved in a specific solvent.
What is a concentrated solution?
A solution with a large amount of solute particles in a given volume of solution.
What is a dilute solution?
A solution with a small amount of solute particles in a given volume of solution.
What is concentration?
The amount of solute in a solution.
What does saturated mean in terms of solutions?
A solution in which no more solute can dissolve.
What is an unsaturated solution?
A solution in which more solute can be dissolved.
Define solubility.
Measuring how much solute can dissolve in a solution.
What is the difference between solution, solvent, and solute?
A mixture that only looks like one element (solution) VS the smaller part of the solution that dissolves into the solute (solvent) VS the larger part of the solution that helps dissolve the solvent (solute).
What is the difference between solid, liquid, and gas solutions?
Solid: has volume and a definite shape. Liquid: has volume and an indefinite shape. Gas: has indefinite volume and an indefinite shape.
What are three ways to increase/decrease solubility?
- Raise/lower the temperature
- Stirring or letting it sit
- Particle sizes
How do you calculate concentration?
Concentration = mass of solute in grams OVER 100mL of solution.
How do you calculate solubility?
Solubility = Maximum mass of solute that will dissolve in grams OVER 100mL solvent at a certain temperature.
What are three common solvents?
- Water
- Methanol
- Ethanol
What are three common solutes?
- Salt
- Sugar
- Carbon dioxide
True or False: A concentrated solution has fewer solute particles than a dilute solution.
False.
What is the solvent in maple syrup?
Sap.
What are some solutes in maple syrup?
- Sugar
Is maple syrup or sap less concentrated and why?
Sap is less concentrated because it is runnier and clearer.
