3
Q

How do Fossils prove evolution?

A

The fossils lower and lower can be viewed as a more primitive version of fossils higher up on the rock layer which allows us to view the succession of evolution through the timeline of fossils.

Q

How does homologous structures prove evolution?

A

homologous structures support the theory of evolution by demonstrating shared ancestry and the adaptive changes that occur over time. (physical features found in different organisms that share a common ancestor and illustrate descent from a common evolutionary origin.)

6
Q

How do you use Relative Dating to find the age of rocks?

A

By comparing rock layers geologists can find the age of rocks, but not to the exact age

Q

How do you use Radioactive Decay to find the age of rock?

A

By measuring the quantity of unstable radioactive isotopes left in a rock and comparing it to the quantity of stable daughter products

Q

What is the Conservation of Mass?

A

the total mass of a closed system remains constant over time. This means that mass cannot be created or destroyed, but it can change forms.

12
Q

How do you name ionic compounds?

A

for ionic compounds the name is formed by listing the cation (positively charged ion) first, followed by the anion (negatively charged ion) with the suffix “-ide” if it is a nonmetal. If the anion is polyatomic, the name of the polyatomic ion is used without the “-ide” suffix. For example, sodium chloride (NaCl) is named by listing sodium (the cation) first and then chloride (the anion).

13
Q

How do you name covalent compounds?

A

While for covalent compounds the name of the first element in the formula is written first, followed by the second element’s name with the suffix “-ide”. If there is more than one atom of the first element, numerical prefixes are used to indicate the number of atoms. For example, carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) is named by listing carbon first and then using the prefix “tetra-“ to indicate four chlorine atoms

Q

What is an acid?

A

An acid is a substance that produces hydrogen (H+) ions when it is added to water.234 Acids have a pH less than ,7 and taste sour.

Q

What is neutralisation?

A

A chemical reaction where an acid and a base react to form a salt and water, typically resulting in a neutral pH solution

17
Q

What happens when you add an acid to a metal?

A

a chemical reaction occurs where the metal displaces hydrogen from the acid, producing hydrogen gas and a salt

18
Q

What happens when you add a base to a metal?

A

When base reacts with the metal it form the metalic salt and displace hydrogen. Example - Zn + 2 NaOH →Na 2 ZnO 2 + H 2 gas

19
Q

What happens when you add an acid to a carbonate?

A

a reaction occurs that produces a salt, water, and carbon dioxide gas

20
Q

What happens when you add a base to a carbonate?

A

No chemical reaction occurs

21
Q

What is a displacement reaction?

A

a chemical reaction in which one element replaces another element in a compound.

AB + CD -> AD + CB

22
Q

What is a combination reaction?

A

a type of chemical reaction where two or more substances combine to form a single new substance without any separate byproducts.

A + B -> AB

23
Q

What is a decomposition reaction?

A

A decomposition reaction is a type of chemical reaction in which a single compound breaks down into two or more simpler substances.

AB -> A + B

24
Q

What is a combustion reaction?

A

a type of chemical reaction in which a substance, often a fuel, reacts with an oxidant, usually oxygen, to produce heat and light, typically in the form of a flame

25
Define corrosion
Corrosion is defined as the degradation of materials, typically metals, due to a reaction with their environment.
26
What is Synthesis?
Formation of a compound from simpler compounds or elements.
27
What is decomposition?
Separation into elements by chemical reaction.
28
What are the main parts of a word equation?
Reactants: The substances that start the reaction. Products: The substances that are formed as a result of the reaction. Reaction Direction: A phrase like "reacts with" or "forms" that indicates the direction of the reaction.
29
Write a chemical equation for: hydrochloric acid + sodium hydroxide → sodium chloride + water Hydrogen is H Sodium is Na composition of water is H20
HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H2O
30
What is the closest living relative to humans?
The closest living relatives of humans are chimpanzees and bonobos, with whom we share about 98.7% of our DNA
31
How did peppered moths survive the IR(Industrial revolution?)
as pollution darkened the trees, the darker morphs became better camouflaged and thus more likely to survive and reproduce.
32
What are the main types of evolution?
Convergent, Divergent and Parrelel
33
What is convergent evolution?
Convergent evolution happens when distantly related species face similar selection pressures and evolve similar phenotypes over time
34
What is divergent evolution?
Divergent evolution occurs when closely related lineages face different selection pressures, causing their phenotypes to diverge
35
What is parralell evolution?
Parallel evolution is when closely related species experience similar selection pressures and their phenotypes remain similar as they evolve in isolation. This means that the same traits evolve in similar ways in different populations.
36
how does bacteria survive in the presence of antibiotics?
The bacteria develops immunities against the antibiotics by having mutations allowing it to develop defense mechanisms
37
What are transitional forms?
Transitional forms in evolution are fossils that exhibit traits common to both an ancestral group and its derived descendant group. These forms serve as evidence of evolutionary changes over time, illustrating the transition between different species or groups.
38
What is the purpose of transitional forms?
Show intermediate states between an ancestral trait and that of its later descendants, providing evidence for evolutionary change over time.
39
What was Charles Darwin's Theory of evolution?
Species of organisms arise and develop through the natural selection of small, inherited variations that increase the individual's ability to compete, survive, and reproduce
40
What was Jean-Bapiste's theory on evolution?
physical changes in organisms during their lifetime, such as the development of an organ through increased use, could be passed on to their offspring.
41
What is similar in these two theories?
- aquirred traits - behavioural traits only
42
Of chemical equations A-D what was the chemicals
A Sodium Chloride B Water C Carbon Dioxide D Hydrogen
