What does HHPS stand for?
Hazardous Household Product Symbol
What does WHMIS stand for?
Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System
What does MSDS stand for?
Material Safety Data Sheets
How do we know when a product is safe to use?
Many products are useful in the home and industry, such as cleaners, lubricants, and paints. If they are used properly they are very helpful. Products have labels and symbols we need to follow and understand.
How do we know how dangerous a product is based on an HHPS symbol?
We need to look at the shape of each symbol.
Octagon is a danger
Square is a warning
Triangle is a caution
What are HHPS symbols used for?
These are used for products in the home.
How do WHMIS help you?
WHMIS symbols help you determine how to handle or dispose of a material safely.
Which WHMIS symbol shows the dangers of uncontrolled release, suffocation, and frostbite.
Compressed Gas
What are some examples of a Compressed Gas?
- Oxygen
- Propane
- Helium
Which WHMIS symbol shows the dangers of fire and explosion.
Flammable and Combustible Material
Compressed Gas
Gas at normal room temperature and pressure is contained under pressure (usually in a cylinder).
What are some examples of a Flammable and Combustible Material?
- Diesel fuel
- Kerosene
- Gasoline
- Magnesium
- Wood and Paper
Flammable and Combustible Material
Solids, liquids, and gases that are capable of catching fire in the presence of a spark or open flame.
Oxidizing Materials
Chemicals that decompose readily to supply oxygen. They increase the risk of fire if they come in contact with Flammable of Combustible Materials.
Which WHMIS symbol intensify fires and explosions?
Oxidizing Materials
What are some examples of Oxidizing Materials?
- Ozone
- Nitrogen dioxide
- Peroxide
Poisonous Materials OR Deadly Materials
These are materials that can cause death or injury because of very small amounts and have immediate serious toxic effects.
What are examples if Deadly Materials?
- Carbon Monoxide
- Cyanide
- Hydrogen sulfide
Infectious Materials OR Toxic Materials
These can have long-term health problems and are life threatening.
What are examples of Toxic Materials?
- Asbestos
- Ammonia
- Mercury
Biological Hazard OR Bio-hazardous Infections
Organisms or toxins produced, that cause disease in people or animals such as Bacteria, Viruses, Fungi, and Parasites.
What are examples of Biological Hazards?
- Hepatitis
- AIDS/HIV
- TB
- Salmonella
Corrosive Materials
Cause permanent and severe burns to the skin and other tissues
Which WHMIS symbol shows the dangers of corrosion of metals and severe burns in human tissue?
Corrosive Materials
