(27 cards)
Inference
A conclusion reached on the basis of evidence
Proof
Evidence establishing a fact or the truth of a statement
Evidence
The available body of facts or information indicating whether a belief is true or valid
What is Edmond Locards principal
“Every contact leaves a trace”
This means there is always evidence to solve a case
What is a fingerprint?
A fingerprint is a persons characteristic; no two people have had the exact same fingerprint
How many classes of fingerprints are there?
3
What are the classes of fingerprints?
- Arch
- Loop
- Whorl
- Composite
Dactylography
The study of fingerprints
What are latent prints?
Latent prints are impressions left by friction ridge skin on a surface, such as a tool handle, glass, door, etc
DNA
Deoxyribonucleic Acid
Tells you who you are.
Define reactant
A chemical we have at the start of a reaction
Define product
A substance formed after or while a reaction
What are the 3 states of matter?
Solid
Liquid
Gas
What is an element made up of?
They are made out of one type of atom
Forensic science
the use of science to investigate matters of the law
Trace evidence
Pollen, bullets, footprints, fingerprints, hair, and soil are examples of trace evidence
Gene
a small sequence of DNA which is transferred from a parent to child and is responsible for determining some characteristic of the child. i.e. there are genes responsible for brown hair, genes for blue eyes, etc.
Atom
A very small particle that makes up things
Atomic number
The number of protons in an atom
Burning
combining a substance with oxygen in a flame
Catalyst
chemical that helps to start or speed up a chemical reaction
Compound
substance made up of two or more different types of atoms that have been chemically joined (bonded) together.
Protons
tiny, but heavy, particle found in the nucleus of an atom. Protons have a positive electrical charge.
Eyewitness
A person who has information about the event
