Science Inquiry Flashcards
(25 cards)
control group
a comparison group that is as similar as possible to experimental group, except for the variable being tested;
- independent variable is absent or unchanged
controlled variable
variable that is controlled and kept constant during experiment
dependent variable
variable that changes as a result of changes to the independent variable
extrapolation
extension beyod the measured range of data to predict or construct new data has not been measured
hypothesis
scientific statement based on the variable information that can be tested by experimentation
independent variable
variable intentionally varied to see an outcome will be for another variable
interpolation
predicting or constructing a new data point that has not been measured but is within the range of measured data
mean
average set of values
measurement error
difference between measurement result and currently accepted standard value
median
central value of data set, if even number take average of 2 central values
outlier
data point that does not fit in pattern shown by other measured data points
primary data
data measured from yourself
qualitative data
measurement with descriptive or non-numerical values
quantitative data
measurement with numberical values
rate
measurement of change in a factor in comparison to another factor
refinement
methods that alleviate to reduce harm or distress on test animals; to enhance the animal’s wellbeing
reduction
using only minimum number of animals in research to satisfy statistical requirements
reliability
the degree to which an instrument/protocol/procedure is able to repeatedly measure and achieve similar results for the same population
replacement
substitution of insentient materials or animals or lower sentience for conscious living animals
or use of animal models
secondary data
data that has been collected by someone else
theory
collection of models and concepts that explain specific systems
- allow predictions to be made and hence can be proved false
validity
the extent to which tests (variables were controlled in) measure what was intended that are accurate
inference
likely explanation of an observation
observation
using all your senses to notice things around you
