What are forces measured in?
Forces are measured in Newtons (N).
What is a N to a kg?
At the Earth’s surface a mass of 1 kilogram weighs about 10 Newtons.
What is buoyancy?
Buoyancy is an upwards force exerted by a fluid if it balances out the weight of an object then the object will float.
Why do ships not sink?
If an object displaces its own weight in water then it will not sink. Even large, heavy objects, such as large ships, can be designed so that they are able to displace their own weight in water and stay a float.
How can the volume of irregular shaped objects?
The displacement of water can be used to measure the volume of irregularly shaped objects. This plus the mass of the object allows the calculation of its density.
