Science - Optics Flashcards
(18 cards)
Refraction
Change in direction of light as it travels from one material to another
Incident Ray
Ray of light that arrives at a mirror or enters a substance
Specular reflection
Reflection off smooth surfaces ( glassy water )
Diffuse reflection
Reflection of light off an uneven surface ( results in light scattering in many directions )
Reflected Ray
Light that bounces off the surface
Non-luminous
Objects that do not give out light, but may reflect it, most objects on earth are non-luminous ( moon )
Law of reflection
The angle of incidents is always equal to the angle of reflection
Shadow
Area of reduced light created whenever an opaque object blocks the path of light
What makes objects appear certain colours
When the object absorbs all the colours except for the one you see that one is reflected
Penumbra
The partially shaded region of a shadow, formed by some light passing through an opaque object ( edge)
Umbra
The fully shaded region of a shadow ( darkest )
Opaque
Describes materials that do not allow light to pass through ( wood, metal )
Luminous
Objects that give out light ( sun, fire, lightbulb )
Normal
Line perpendicular to a surface (90° angle with surface)
Angle of reflection
Angle between the reflected ray and the normal
Angle of incidents
Angle between the incoming ray and the normal
Transparent
Describe materials that allow light to pass through with little or no reflection
Translucent
Describes materials that allow some light to pass through
