Science Pg19 - 23 Flashcards
(22 cards)
How is heat transferred to objects
By convection, conduction , and radiation
Conduction
Heat moves through objects ( soilids?)
Convection
Heat moves through air or water ( gas /liquid)
Radiation
Heat moves through empty space
Conduction
The transfer of heat through an object or from one object to another
Conducter
Material that transfers heat well by conduction
Insulators
Materials that don’t transfer heat well by conduction
Why is metal a good conductor of heat
Because the particles are packed closely toghether
What are poor conductors of heat called
Insulators
What usally do pots and pans have on the lids/handles
Wood
Plastic
Teflon
2 exp. Of good insulators
Styrfoam
Plastic
Explain the transfer of heat in liquids and air
Convection is the transfer of heat by the movement of liquid or gas particles
Convection
The transfer of heat through air or water
Convection currents
Cold air sinks hot air rises
Give Exp. Of transfer of heat through air and liquid in a line
HEAT FROM FIRE. HEAT IN AIR. HEAT ON YOUR SKIN.
What happens when water heats up and why
When water heats up the water particles move faster and further apart. This makes the water expand and rise. This is because convection currents
Where should you place a heater and an air-conditioning in a room and why?
Heater on ground (hot air rises)
Aircon on roof (cold air sinks)
Radiation
The transfer of heat through empty space
Reflectors
Objects and materials that reflect heat
What type of objects reflect heat
Any object that is hotter than its surroundings
Dark colours absorb heat..black
Light coulors reflect heat…white / silvery
True
What are reflectors
Objects that reflect the heat
