Science Questions Flashcards
(72 cards)
List three fossil fuels.
Coal, oil, and natural gas.
What is energy?
The ability to cause change.
What is coal, oil, and natural gas used for?
Coal: electricity
Oil:gasoline or other fuels
Natural Gas:heat buildings
What does coal contain and when does it begin forming? Explain.
- coal begins to form when plants die in swampy areas.
- deals plants are covered by more plants and water and sediment.
- bacteria growth causes rapid breakdown
- the breakdown will allow coal to form over millions of years
What is the first stage in the formation of coal called? What is it composed? What is true when it burns?
Peat-organic sediment-large amount of smoke is produced.
What is the first stage in the formation of coal called? What is true of lignite? What is true when it burns?
Lignite-soft, brown coal with less moisture-releases more energy and less smoke.
What is the first stage in the formation of coal called? What is true of bituminous? What is true when it burns?
Bituminous-compact,black,brittle;lots of suffer present-lots of heat and energy.
What is the first stage in the formation of coal called? What is true of anthracite? What is true when it burns?
Anthracite-highest amount of carbon-cleanest burning coal.
In the United States how much energy is derived from oil? Natural Gas? Coal?
Coal-22.7%
Natural Gas-23.6%
Oil-39.4%
What is natural gas mostly used for? Most oil mostly used for.
Natural Gas-heating and cooking
Oil-heating oil, gasoline, lubricants, and plastics
Describe how oil and natural gas forms.
Marine organisms called plankton die and fall to the sea floor. Similar to the way coal buried, sediment is deposited over them. The temperature rises within the depth of earth and increased heat eventually causes dead plankton to change to oil gas after they have been buried deeply in the sediment.
Why do oil and natural gas migrate upward through water-saturated rock?
They are less dense then the surrounding objects.
Why is natural gas found on top of oil in a reservoir?
Natural gas is composed of hydrogen particles that are lighter then oil.
What prevents oil and natural gas from reaching the surface.
Shale-impermeable rocks
What are reservoir rocks.
A place where petroleum and natural gas accumulate.
What two methods are used to remove coal from the ground.
strip Mining also known as open pit Mining
Underground Mining
How is oil and natural gas removed from the ground.
Pumping them out.
Describe the process of strip mining.
Layers of soil and rock are removed and pulled to one side, exposed coal is removed and loaded.
When is strip mining used.
When coal is close to the surface.
Describe drift mining.
Horizontal openings in the side of hills or mountains.
Describe slope mining.
Angled openings and air shaft are made in the side of the mountain.
How are oil and natural gas brought to Earths surface.
Pumped-drill wells-poles prevent caving in-equipment is instilled to get oil after drilling.
Current reserves of coal are of castes to last how long.
250 years
Current reserves of natural gas located to last how long.
310 years- or 60 more years then coal.
