Science Quiz Review Flashcards
(21 cards)
Conclusion
A summary and explanation of the main findings of a science experiment.
Controlled Conditions
When just one factor (independent variable) is changed at a time, while all of the others are kept the same.
Empirical
Based on or provable by observation or experience rather than theory or guesswork.
Experiment
A procedure carried out under controlled conditions in order to test a hypothesis or to illustrate a known law.
Hypothesis
An explanation for an observation, phenomenon, or scientific problem that can be tested by further investigation.
Peer Review
Evaluation of scientific, academic, or professional work by others working in the same field.
Scientific method
A method of research in which a problem is identified, a hypothesis is formed, and the hypothesis is tested through experiment.
Scientific Theory
A well-tested, broad explanation of a natural phenomenon.
Wave
A back-and-forth pattern of motion that transfers energy
Frequency
A rate of something that repeats over and over
Pulse
A short burst that travels as a wave
Amplitude
The height of the peaks above the resting line in a wave
Wavelength
The length of one wave; can be measured as the distance from the center of one peak to the center of the next peak
Compression Wave
A wave in which the wave’s medium is compressed in the same direction as the movement of the wave
Transverse Wave
A wave in which the movement of the wave’s medium is perpendicular to the movement of the wave traveling through the medium
Reflection
The bouncing back of waves off an object
Medium (plural: media)
A substance or material (solid, liquid, or gas) through which a wave travels
Medium (plural: media)
A wave of electricity and magnetism that can travel through a medium or empty space
Electromagnetic Spectrum
The range of all different electromagnetic wavelengths, including visible light, that can be seen as different colors and other wavelengths that cannot be seen by the human eye
Light
Electromagnetic radiation that is reflected off surfaces and can be seen
Refraction
The changing of a wave’s speed and direction as it travels into a medium
