science revision Flashcards
(41 cards)
What is an element
a basic substance made of only one type of atom
What is the symbol for iron
Fe
What is the symbol for sodium
Na
Is oxygen a metal or a non metal
non metal
Do all metals end in (ium)
No, for example zinc
How can you tell that something is a physical change
When there is a change of size, change of shape, change of state and are reversable
How can you tell that something is a chemical change
When there is fizzing (new substance changed into a gas), change of colour, temperature changes, change of smell, light energy that is given out and it is hard to be reversed.
Is a raw egg being cooked into a fried egg a physical or chemical change and why
Chemical because there is a change of colour, temperature, smell and it can’t be reversed.
Is turning water into ice a chemical or physical change and why
Physical because there is a change of size, shape and it can be reversable
Is baking a cake a chemical of physical change and why
Chemical because there is a change of smell, colour, temperature and can’t be reversed
Is boiling water to make steam a physical or chemical change and why
Physical because there is a change of state and can be reversable
Write the word equation for when magnesium reacts with oxygen it produces magnesium oxide
magnesium + oxygen —-> magnesium oxide
Write the word equation for when Hydrochloric acid is formed when hydrogen reacts with chlorine
hydrogen + chlorine —–> Hydrochloric acid
Copper oxide is produced when copper and oxygen react together
Copper + Oxygen ———> Copper oxide
Sodium reacts with chlorine to produce sodium chloride
Sodium + Chlorine ——–> Sodium Chloride
what are the properties of metals when solid
Good conductor of electricity, good conductor of heat, shiny, high density (heavy for its size), malleable (you can hammer it into different shapes) and ductile (able to bend but it wont break)
what are the properties of a typical non-metal (when solid)
poor conductor of electricity, poor conductor of heat, dull, low density (light for its size), brittle (breaks easily)
What is puberty
the process of physical changes through which a child’s body develops over time into an adult is called puberty
What is adolescence
The period of time during which a young person develops from a child into an adult is called adolescence
What is the difference between puberty and adolescence
Adolescence is both physical and emotional changes but puberty is just physical.
what are the male and female sex hormones
Testosterone for males and Estrogen and Progesterone for females
what does Oestrogen do
Responsible for the development of the female reproductive system. - Breasts grow larger, hips get wider and pubic hair grows
what does Testosterone do
Responsible for the development of the male reproductive system. - Voice gets deeper, more muscular, and pubic hair grows.
What is the definition of Fertilisation
Fertilization is the process in which the nucleus of a sperm cell fuses with the nucleus of an egg cell to produce a zygote.
