Science: separation methods Flashcards
(8 cards)
What does chromatography separate?
Substances that move at different rates through a medium. Like dyes in food colouring.
What does filtration separate?
An insoluble solid from a liquid. Like getting sand from a mixture of sand, salt and water.
What does crystallisation separate?
A soluble solid from a solution. Like pure crystals of sodium chloride from salt water.
What does simple distillation separate?
A solvent from a solution. Like pure water from salt water.
What does fractional distillation separate?
A mixture of liquids, each with different boiling points. Like different compounds in crude oil.
What is a solution?
A mixture of multiple substances. It contains a solute, which is dissolved and evenly distributed within the solvent.
What is a solute?
The substance in the solution that dissolves. Like the salt dissolving in water.
What is a solvent?
The liquid in which the solute dissolves. Like the water in which the salt dissolves.
