Science STAAR Vocab Flashcards
(51 cards)
electrical energy
Energy caused by the movement of electric charges.
conductor
A material that transfers energy easily.
insulator
A material that reduces or prevents the transfer of energy.
density
The amount of matter in an object compared to the space it takes up.
solubility
How much of a substance will dissolve in a given amount of a different substance.
volume
The amount of space an object takes up.
mixture
A combination of two or more different substances in which the substances keep their identities.
physical property
Anything you can observe about an object by using one or more of your senses.
solution
A mixture that has the same composition throughout because all its parts are mixed evenly.
dissolve
To completely mix two substances.
conservation of matter
A science concept that states that matter cannot be made or destroyed, however it can change into a new form.
force
A push or a pull, which may cause a change in an object’s motion.
motion
A change of position of an object.
balanced forces
Forces that cancel each other out because they are equal in size and opposite in direction.
unbalanced forces
Forces that cause a change in an object’s motion because they don’t cancel each other out.
energy transfer
The movement of energy from place to place or from one object to another.
energy transformation
A change in energy from one form to another.
chemical energy
Energy that is stored in matter and that can be released by a chemical reaction.
electric current
The flow of electrically charged particles.
electrical circuit
The path an electric current follows.
light
Energy that lets you see.
absorb
To be taken in by an object.
reflect
To bounce off an object.
refract
To bend light as it moves from one material to another.
