Science study flashcards 3( acids and bases )
(18 cards)
What is a PH
number between 0 and 14 that tells us how acidic or basic a substance is
What is alkali
a base that can dissolve in water
What is acidic
substance with a PH between 0 and 7
What is a base
substance with a PH between 7 and 14
What is neutral
substance that is neither an acid or a base, with a PH of 7
What is an indicator
a dye that is changed into different acids, bases and buetrla substances
What is the universal indicator
PH indicator consisting of substances, so that it causes colour changes across the entire PH range
PH scale
scaling of PH values, shows numbers from 1 to 14, with 7 as the middle neutral point
Independent variable
the factor that changes the scientist in an experiment/ investigation
Dependent variable
the quantity or quality measured or observed by an experiment
What is the property of an acid ( taste, PH, indicator paper, electrical conduction, feel, corrosivity, ions
sour, less than 7, turns blue litmus paper red, conduct electricity, can feel rough on skin, can burn, hydrogen ions
What is the property of a base ( taste, PH, indicator paper, electrical conduction, feel, corrosivity, ions
bitter, greater than 7, turns red litmus paper blue, conduct electricity, feels smooth, can burn, hydroxide ions
Independent variable is on the
x axis
Dependent variable is on the
y axis
Give me examples of a household acid
lemon juice and fruit acids
Give me an example of a strong household acids
hydrochloric acid ( HCL ) nitric acid ( NHO3)
Give me an example of a household base
soap and handy Andy
