SCIENCE TERM 2 Flashcards
(26 cards)
What is the purpose of the Digestive system?
Group of organs that work together to break down food into nutrients the body can absorb and use for energy, growth, and repair.
What is the purpose of the Respiratory system?
Responsible for taking in oxygen and removing carbon dioxide through the process of breathing
What is the purpose of the Circulatory system?
Transports blood, oxygen, nutrients, and waste products throughout the body using the heart, blood, and blood vessels
What is the purpose of the Nervous system?
Controls and coordinates body activities by transmitting signals between the brain, spinal cord, and the rest of the body
What is the purpose of the Muscular system
Allows movement of the body, maintains posture, and helps circulate blood through the action of muscles
What is the purpose of the Excretory system
Removes waste
What is the purpose of the Endocrine system
Produces and releases and produces hormones which are chemical messages
What is the purpose of the Integumentary system
Includes the skin, hair, and nails, and it protects the body from external damage, regulates temperature, and helps sense the environment
What is the purpose of the Immune system
Defends the body against harmful pathogens like bacteria, viruses, and other foreign invaders to keep it healthy
What is the purpose of the Skeletal system
Provides structure and support to the body, protects internal organs
What is the purpose of the Reproductive system
Allows any living thing to reproduce / produce new individuals
What is the pathway of air going in through your respiratory system?
Surrounding air —> mouth —> nasal cavity —> Pharynx —> Trachea —> Bronchi —> Bronchioles —> Alveoli —> oxygen diffuses into blood
What is the pathway of air going out through your respiratory system?
oxygen diffuses out of blood —> alveoli —> Bronchioles —> Bronchi —> Trachea —> Pharynx —> nasal cavity —> mouth —> surrounding air
What is diffusion?
is the movement of particles from an area of high concentration (how much of something we have in a particular area) to low concentration, until equilibrium is reached
What is concentration?
The amount of a substance in a fixed volume
What happens when we breathe in?
The muscles between ribs (intercostal muscles) & diaphragm contract
What happens when we breathe out?
The muscles between ribs (intercostal muscles) & diaphragm relax allowing air to go out
What is Villi?
Villi are in the lining of the small intestine. They increase surface area to maximise nutrient, absorption.
What are Enzymes?
Enzymes are biological catalysts. This means they speed up chemical reactions without being used up.
Finish the sentence :
Carbohydrates are broken down into sugars by the enzyme ….
AMYLASE
Finish the sentence :
Proteins are broken down into amino acids by the enzyme ….
PROTEASE
Finish the sentence :
Fats (liquids) are broken down into glycerol & fatty acids by the enzyme ….
LIPASE
What are cells?
Multicellular organisms are made up of many types of cells, each with a different job to do
What is tissue?
Groups of similar cells that perform, a specialised job are called tissues
