Science Test 12/4 Flashcards
(25 cards)
Describe if mountains are formed by faulting or folding of rocks
Folding because the rocks bend to form a mountain
Describe how mountains form
Mountains formed when 2 continental plates crash into each other. To be specific when continental/continental crust collide
What convergent boundary do mountains for at?
Continental/Continental
At the ocean floor, oceanic crust is most often formed at what boundary?
Divergent
Describe the difference between faulting and folding
Folding - Rocks bend because of pressure
Faulting - Rocks break under pressure
Describe how volcanoes form on the coast of many continents
Oceanic plate slides under the continental plate and the continent will form over the oceanic crust. Which forms volcanoes
Describe the difference between the three types of Convergent plate boundaries
C/C - When 2 dense plates collide
C/O - When 1 less dense and 1 more dense plate collide (Subduction)
O/O - When 2 very less dense oceanic crust collide (Subduction)
Which type of plate boundary feature is associated with compressive forces, faulting and folding?
Convergent (Folding)
Divergent (Faulting)
When rock layers break, is that faulting or folding of rock layers?
Faulting
The area surrounding the Pacific Ocean called the Ring of Fire is a result of convergent boundaries. Describe other geological events that come from the movement of tectonic plate movement.
- Volcanoes
- Mountains
- Tsunamis
Describe the theory of sea-floor spreading
When sea floor starts spreading. Magma rushes through the cracks and makes new oceanic crust.
Describe the theory of continental drift
The continents were once together. Because of the plates moving the continents are were they are now
Describe the convection theory
When convection atoms move the magma under the crust
Describe the difference between convergent, divergent, and transform boundaries
Convergent - Collide
Divergent - Split
Transform - Slide
Describe what a hot spot is
A thin part in the mantle where magma constantly flow upwards
The San Andres Fault is an example of what boundary?
Transform
Describe how a geyser is formed
The groundwater gets heated up by the magma. The surface water recharges the water which circulates in the subsurface and then it erupts
Describe how a hot spring is formed
A hot spring is a spring on naturally hot water that forms because of volcanic activity. There is some volcanic activity where hot springs are produce. Volcanic activity is crucial for a hot spring in order for it to be made. The water gets heated up because of the water under the crust.
Describe what an ocean vent is
When subduction zones crash into each other or separate, the cold seawater is immediately heated by hot magma and reemerges to form the vents.
Why does the oceanic plate go under the continental plate during an oceanic/continental collision?
Because the continental plate is denser than the oceanic plate
What are the three main types of plate boundaries?
Convergent, Divergent, and Transform
What is a convergent boundary?
2 tectonic plates push into each other
What is a divergent boundary?
2 tectonic plates move away for one another
What is a transform boundary?
2 tectonic plates slide past each other horizontally
