Science Trivia Flashcards
(21 cards)
What is an Astronomical Unit?
The average Distance between Earth and the Sun
What is a Light Year?
The Distance Light travels in a year.
A Nebula is composed of…..?
Clouds of gas and dust c ast off by neighboring stars.

What is a planetesimal?
A shape belived to have fused to form the planets in our solar system.

What makes a Constellation?
Give an example of some.
A constellation is made from various groups of stars that form a shape(dog Greek mythology, etc.) and has been given a name by scientists.
Ex: Great Bear, Centuar, Orion, Big Dipper, Gemini.

What reacts in a Nuclear Fusion, and how?
During a nuclear fusion, the Nuclei forms into a nucleus, by releasing energy.
What are Terrestrial planets?
What are the terrestrial planets in our galaxy?
Terrestrial planets are the four closest planets to the sun. The terrestrial planets in our galaxy are Mercury Venus, Earth and Mars.
Why are Gas Giant Planets different than REGULAR planets?
Where does a Comet Travel around?
A comet travels close to the sun while sustaining itself at an highly ecliptal orbit.
What is an Asteroid?
An Asteroid is a small body of rock/space debris that orbits around the sun
What does a Cosmologist teach?
A Cosmologist teaches about the general structure of the universe.
What is an Orbit? Give an example.
An orbit is a track that runs continuesly without end.
Ex: Earth moving arount the sun.

What is a period? Give an example of a period.
A period is the time it takes for something to make a complete a cycle.
Ex: A satelite that orbits the Earth.
Define the term “Revolve”, and give an example of something that revolves.
Revolve means to move around something periodically in cycles.
Ex: The moon Revolves around the Earth.

Define the term “Rotation”, and give an example of it.
The act of moving in a complete circle on something.
Ex: Earth makes one rotation in twenty-four hours.

What is a Sidereal Day, and how long is it for our sun?
The time needed for the Earth to make a complete rotation around any star. It takes approx. twenty-four hours for the Earth to complete one sidereal.
How long is one Solar Day?
One solar Day (the time required for Earth to fully rotate itself in respect to the Sun) is twenty-four hours.
How long is a Solar Year
One solar year (the time required for the Earth to make a complete rotation around the Sun.) is three hundred sixty-five days.
Define Angular Velocity, and Give an Example?
Angular Velocity is the rate of change of an object in time called radians(usually seconds and minutes).
Ex: The earth spins at an angular velocity of 2 radians per second.
What does a protoplanetary planet exhibit? Give an Example.
A planet that going through protoplanetary stages displays early forms of evolution.
Ex: Bacteria would begin to develop on a planet that is going through protoplanetary stages.
How long is one parsec
One parsec is rqual to 3.26 light years.
