Science Vocab Flashcards
Earth Ch. 14 (20 cards)
The process of breaking down rocks and minerals. Caused by the Sun’s energy, wind, running water, and the actions of organisms.
Weathering
The process of breaking down rocks and minerals by chemical reactions.
Chemical Weathering
The process of breaking down rocks into smaller pieces by physical force. Also called physical weathering.
Mechanical Weathering
Mechanical Weathering that results from freezing water.
Frost Wedging
The process of moving sediment by wind, water, ice, or gravity.
Erosion
A large body of water that flows into an ocean or lake.
River
A small river.
Stream
The path that a river or stream follows.
Channel
The process of depositing sediment after it has been moved by wind, water, ice, or gravity.
Deposition
A layer of sediment with the largest particles at the bottom and smaller particles at the top.
Graded Bedding
the order in which sedimentary rock layers are formed from larger to finer particles.
Direction of Younging
A pattern of alternating beds of sediment that often form as wind and water deposit the sediments.
Cross Bedding
the downhill movement of large amounts of rock that slides down a volcano or mountain.
Mass Wasting
A large mass of soil or rock that slides down a volcano or mountain.
Landslide
An event that results in a large amount of rock splitting off a landform.
Rockfall
An event that occurs when a large amount of rock, sediment, plant material, and water flows down the mountain.
Mudflow
An event that occurs when soil particles become surrounded by water so that the ground slides or “slumps.”
Slumping
flat land alongside a river that tends to flood.
Floodplain
S-shaped curves in a river.
Meanders
A stream that has many channels that criss-cross each other.
Braided stream
