Flashcards in Science Vocab Deck (26):
1

Energy Pyramid

A model that shows the available amount of energy in each trophic layer in an ecosystem

2

Food Web

A model that shows many different feeding relationships among living things

3

Decomposer

Organisms which carry out the process of decomposition by breaking down dead or decaying organisms

4

Food Chain

A model that shows one set of feeding relationships among living things

5

Coniferous

A type of plant with needle-like leaves that uses cones to reproduce

6

Consumer

An organism that eats other living things to get energy ; an organism that does not produce its own food

7

Biome

A major ecological community such as grassland, tropical rain forest, or desert

8

Deciduous

A forest containing trees that lose their leaves each year

9

Ecology

The branch of biology that deals with the relations of organisms to one another and to their physical surroundings

10

Cycle

Any complete round or series of occurrences that repeats or is repeated

11

Nitrogen Cycle

A process in which Nitrogen in the atmosphere enters the soil and becomes part of the living organism then eventually returns to the atmosphere

12

Biotic Factors

All the living parts of an ecosystem

13

Water Cycle

The continual movement of water between the land, ocean, and air

14

Abiotic Factor

All the non-living parts of an ecosystem

15

Producer

An organism that makes its own food; an organism that does not consume other plants or animals

16

Carbon Cycle

A natural cycle in which carbon compounds, mainly carbon dioxide, are incorporated into living tissue through photosynthesis and returned to the atmosphere by respiration, decay of dead organisms, and the burning of fossil fuels

17

Predator

An animal that hunts and eats another animal

18

Prey

An animal that is hunted and eaten by another animal

19

Succession

The progression replacement of one community by another until a climax community is established

20

Levels of organization

Species, population, community, ecosystem, biome, biosphere

21

Metric system

Kilo, hecta, deca, gram, meter, liter, deci, Centi, milli

22

Constant Variable

The Variable that doesn’t change

23

Hypothesis

An if/then statement; an educated guess

24

Dependent Variable

The thing that is being measured

25

Independent Variable

One thing that does change in an experiment

26

Lab Safety Rules

Just study because there are too many rules to put down.
