Science-y9 Flashcards
(24 cards)
Tissue
Groups of similar cells that work together to perform a specific function. For example, brain tissue, muscle tissue and heart tissue.
Cells
The basic building blocks of all living things.
Organ
A group of different tissues that work together to do a particular job.
Organ system
A group of organs working together
Enzyme
A molecule that speeds up chemical reactions. Help to digest our food
Alveoli
Structure in the lungs where gas exchange takes place
Reflex
Fast automatic responses of the nervous system that do not involve conscious thought.
Artery
Blood vessel with thick muscular walls that carry oxygenated blood (except pulmonary artery) away from the heart under high pressure.
Vein
Blood vessel with thin walls that carry deoxygenated blood (except pulmonary vein) back to the heart under low pressure. They have valves to prevent backflow.
Capillary
Blood vessel with thin walls that allows exchange of molecules like glucose, oxygen and carbon dioxide.
Stomach
Muscular organ where food is mixed with hydrochloric acid and churned
Pancreas
Produces digestive enzymes
Gall bladder
Stores bile
Small intestine
Where food is mixed with digestive enzymes and bile. Food is absorbed into the blood
Large intestine
Where water is reabsorbed
Active Transport
The movement of particles from an area of low concentration to an area of high concentration, against the concentration gradient.
Diffusion
The movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration, down the concentration gradient.
Stem cell
A cell which has not yet become specialised and is undifferentiated.
Specialised cell
These cells have special features that allow them to perform their functions effectively.
Vacuole
A space within the cytoplasm of plant cells that contains sap.
Cell wall
Outer structure made of cellulose that surrounds the cell and gives it support.
Eukaryote
Cells that have a nucleus, including plant and animal cells
Prokaryote
Cells that do not have a nucleus, e.g. bacteria. Some prokaryotes also have plasmids and flagella.
Reactivity series
A list of metals from most reactant to least reactant.
