3
Q

What if elements are in the same group

A

They will have the same amount of electrons in their outer shell

And have similar properties

Q

What are compounds

A

Compounds are 2 or more elements that are chemically bonded

are made in chemical reactions

Compounds are given a formula for example carbon dioxide is CO2 means 1 carbon atom and 2 oxygen
atoms

Another example is calcium hydroxide Ca(OH)2 which means 1 calcium, 2 oxygen atoms and 2 hydrogen atoms

Q

What happens in some chemical reactions

A

In some chemical reactions it may appear that there are less products then there were reactions; however this is often because a gas has been made and this has escaped into the atmosphere

6
Q

What is a conservation of mass

A

In a chemical reaction, chemcial bonds are broken the atoms are rearranged and the chemical bonds are made again

In a chemical reaction, (mass is never lost), you must start and finish with the same mass

16
Q

What does pure mean

A

A substance made of only ONE type of element or compound

17
Q

What does impure mean

A

A mixture of elements and/or compounds

18
Q

What does chromatography mean

A

A technique where mixtures can be separated based on their solubility

19
Q

What does distillation mean

A

A separation technique which means a mixture of two liquids is heated

20
Q

What does crystallisation mean

A

Method of mixture separation where a solvent is evaporated, leaving the solute behind

21
Q

What is an atom

A

The particles that make up all substances with mass, they contain protons, neutrons and electrons

22
Q

What is a nucleus

A

The centre of an atom, it contains protons and neutrons

23
Q

What is a Nanometre

A

A unit measurement: 1x10-9 m

24
Q

What is a proton

A

A sub atomic particle found in the nucleus, it has a charge of +1 and a relative mass of 1

25
What is a electron
A sub atomic particle found in tue shells of an atom, it has a charge of -1 and a negligible mass
26
What is a subatomic
These are the smaller particles that make up an atom
27
What is a Neutron
A sub atomic particle found in the nucleus of an atom, it has a charge of 0 and a mass of 1
28
What is an atomic number
The number of protons in an atom
29
What is a mass number
The total of protons and neutrons in an atom
