Scientific Method Flashcards
(28 cards)
Scientific method
A process for experimentation that is used to explore observations and answers to questions.
Problem
A question that can be answered through experimentation
Question
Something that may lead to a hypothesis
Hypothesis
An educated guess based on your knowledge and observations
Experiment
A test if it’s true/working
Data
Information that is collected throughout an experiment
Analyze
To examine the data/observations collected
Results
Where you report what happened in the experiment
Conclusion
The end or result of a scientific process
Observation
Watching something carefully and closely to see details
Trial
Measure the same thing multiple times to make the data more precise
Procedure
The method you use to test your hypothesis
Independent variable
the variable you control in an experimental study
Dependent variable
The effect of the independent variable
Control
Element that is unchanged by other variables
Fact
The result of an observation by experimentation
Opinion
A statement describing a personal belief or thought that cannot be tested
Guess
It’s random
Prediction
What the data should look like if the theory fits the real world
Quantitative
Numbers in any type of context in a sentence
Qualitative
Used to understand people’s beliefs, behavior, and interactions (language)
Inference
Belief of what happened to the person or thing that helps our observation
Communication
Transfers scientific ideas and research to scientists in an understandable way
Bias
supporting or disapproving a person in an unfair way because of allowing personal opinions to influence your choosing
