Scientific Method Flashcards
(20 cards)
Hypothesis
A possible explanation that can be tested with an experiment.
Data
Pieces of information that are collected to test a hypothesis.
Observation
Things or events that are made using any of the senses or scientific tools.
Quantitative Data
It is a form of numbers.
Qualitative Data
It is a form of words.
Conclusion
An answer to the research question as suggested by the data which may support or reject the hypothesis.
Independent Variable
The factor that differs between your experimental and control group. “This is what you change.”
Dependent Variable
This is what you measure. These measurements change depending on how the independent variable is changed.
Inference
Conclusions or deductions based on the
observations.
Scientific Inquiry
These steps are the many ways in which scientists study the natural world.
Control Group
No changes are made in an
experiment.
Question
A problem the scientists are looking to solve.
Controlled Experiment
Two procedures are always identical, and they only differ in respect to one
variable.
Experimental Group
One factor is changed, also called the independent variable.
Scientific Method
A process used by scientists to find answers to questions.
Analysis
Everything about the experiment should be
recorded. When you compare the results of an experiment to the prediction posed by the hypothesis.
Theory
Once a hypothesis has been supported by a
significant amount of peer reviewed experiments, the hypothesis can be promoted.
Experiment
A scientific test that provides empirical data for a specific hypothesis.
Control Factors
Any aspects of your experiment that are identical in both your experimental and control group.
Research
A scientist will begin by researching through many means “internet, books, other experiments” to aid in their quest in answering their questions.
