Scientific Method Flashcards
(41 cards)
The steps are as follows:
ask a ——— do ——– ——— a hypotheses —— ——– ——– analyze the ——– and draw a ——- ——– ——— ——–
Ask a QUESTION do RESEARCH CONSTRUCT a hypothesis TEST YOUR HYPOTHESIS analyze theDATA and draw a CONCLUSION SHARE YOUR RESULTS
What is the scientific method? It is a _______for ——- that is used to explore ——- and then ——– ————.
It is a PROCESS for EXPERIMENTATION that is used to explore OBSERVATIONS and then ANSWER QUESTIONS.
Definition of a hypothesis
An ——— ——– based on limited ———-. It is the ——— point for ——— ——–
An EDUCATED GUESS
Based on limited EVIDENCE
It is the STARTING point for YOUR INVESTIGATION
What does a hypothesis look like?
If I do —– then —— Will happen
If I do THIS then THIS will happen
——– ——– experiment: conducted by changing —— —— factor at a time.
FAIR TEST experiment: conducted by changing ONLY ONE factor at a time
___________ should be run _________ _____________ to ensure ________ results.
EXPERIMENTS should be run MULTIPLE TIMES to ensure ACCURATE results.
Controlled vs. _____________ variables; the main __________ involved in scientific __________.
Controlled vs. UNCONTROLLED variables; the main ELEMENTS involved in scientific EXPERIMENTS
Control (_________ __________): is the part you can _________
Control (CONTROLLED VARIABLE): is the part you can CONTROL.
__________ variable: the variable in an experiment that has the potential to ___________ impact the relationship between the __________ and ___________ variables.
UNCONTROLLED variable; the variable in an experiment that has the potential to NEGATIVELY impact the relationship between the INDEPENDENT and DEPENDENT variabls.
_________ variable: ______ that is being ________.
INDEPENDENT variable: FACTOR that is being TESTED
________ variable: changes the _______ from the _________ variable.
DEPENDENT variable: changes the RESULT from the INDEPENDENT variable.
What is a problem
Written in question form (must be testable), test only one variable at a time.
What is research?
Background information about your experiment from another source, about one to two paragraphs is sfficient; written in paragraph form.
What is a Hypothesis?
What you predict will happen; must be written as an “If…, then…” statement before the experiment is conducted.
What is a materials list?
List and number of materials in list form, include amounts
THIS IS NEEDED FOR AN EXPERIMENT
What is a procedure?
list and number all steps in list form; must include details
THIS IS NEEDED FOR AN EXPERIMENT
What is data?
charts, tables, graphs, pictures; must include at least two different forms.
What is a conclusion?
longest portion of the write-up; must be written in paragraph form
A) tell if your hypothesis was correct or incorrect…
B) discuss your variables (independent and dependent)…
C) list at least two extensions-explain what you could have done differently
D) explain at least two concepts you learned from conducting your experiment…
How do you write the conclusion?
The conclusion is the final step of the scientific method. It must be written in paragraph form and include all of the steps of the scientific method….
What is the first step of the scientific method?
The problem is the first step of the scientific method. It is a testable question and should be written in question form.
What is the definition of a test?
An attempt to solve a problem through experimentation. this is also called an experiment or an investigation.
What is research?
Information about an idea obtained through observations, surveys, the internet, books or other sources to answer a question.
What is a demonstration?
A demonstration uses an example or illustrates a series of steps to show how something works. it does not explain WHY it works.
Note: a test attempts to show both!
What is a model?
A model is closely related to the demonstration. Emphasizing the pattern or makeup of the object in question, a model shows its design, but does not explain why it works the way it does.
