Scientific Method Flashcards
(21 cards)
Scientific method
A planned, organized approach to solving a problem
Science
A way of knowing about the natural world based on observation and experiments. These can be confirmed or disproved by other scientists using accepted scientific techniques
Problem
A question that needs an answer (who what when where why and how)
Research
Finding information to help solve a problem or answer questions
Hypothesis
Educated guess. a possible solution that can be tested
Experiment
A data gathering procedure to test to test a hypothesis
Observation
Using one or more of your senses to notice objects or events
Conclusion
Data supports or does not support the hypothesis. data that has been repeatedly confirmed
Report
Share your findings to replicate or confirm your conclusion
Control
The part of the experiment that does not vary or change; allows comparison for the experiment
Constant
An experimental factor or quantity that does not vary between control and variables
Variable
One factor being tested in experiment
Independent variable
The part of the experiment that you intentionally change
Dependant variable
What is going to be measured in response to the changing independent variable
Opinion
A person’s belief or idea
Fact
Something that is excepted as being true with supporting data
Criteria
Standards to judge facts to make decisions
Theory
Well substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world. it typically incorporates many confirmed observations, laws, inferences and successfully confirmed hypotheses
Law
A description about how the natural world behaves under stated circumstances
Citizen of the world
A person who studies far reaching problems that affect not just local areas and makes us aware of these problems and guides us to help solving them
Citizen
A citizen in the common sense is someone who lives in a particular region such as a town, city, state or country. A citizen will also be loyal to the area in the local issues that affect him or her. (they may join or support committees, schoolboard board, Red Cross)
