Scientific Method Flashcards
(29 cards)
Gel Electrophoresis
A test to compare DNA or proteins. DNA is cut with enzymes then placed in wells.
Small fragments fall to the bottom of plate.
Compare banding patterns to read
Chromatography
A test to separate pigments (colors)
Put pigment above the water line
Indicator
A chemical that changes color w/ another chemical.
Ex: Iodine = Amber Iodine + Starch = Blue/Black
Compound light Microscope
Type of microscope that magnifies translucent objects
Dichotomous Key
A chart with two options per level, it’s used to classify the specimen of organism you are studying
Dissection
To examine a preserved specimen
Graduated Cylinder
Tool used to measure liquid volume
Magnification
Used on a microscope or a magnifying glass, to view the object at a larger size.
Mass
Quantity of matter
Metric Ruler
Tool used to measure the metric system with metric units
Model
A representation of a concept that is difficult or impossible to view
Stain
Chemical used to enhance microscopic view of biological samples
Triple Beam Balance
Instrument used to find mass in grams
Volume
The space an object occupies
Conclusion
Decision about the results
Control
Reference point used for comparison between the two groups.
Ex: This group receives a placebo.
Controlled Experiment
Experiment where the only variation between two groups is deliberate
Data
Information gathered from your experiment. It can be graphs, charts or just notes.
Dependent variable
Data that will be measured
Hypothesis
An educated prediction, a tentative explanation to an observation
Independent Variable
The variable that the investigation manipulates
Observation
Data that is collected by the senses
Bias
Belief that is influenced by assumptions
Inference
Conclusions based on observations
