Q

Why is it a controversy?

A

psychology definition: the scientific study of behaviour and experience
-science means knowledge
-according to this definition we focus on what we know to be true rather than what we believe to be true
-there’s a controversy surrounding the scientific status of psychology in relation to 3 issues
1. the extent to which scientific methods can establish the truths about human behaviour
2. the nature of science itself
3. potential costs and benefits of psychology being a science.

Q

Control

A

occurs when a researcher can hold all other variables constant to manipulate independent variable and measure its effect on dependent variable (known as cause and effect)
control most likely to be obtained when a lab environment is used to investigate behaviour.
