Q

Explain the talking point of comparative psychology (Non-human animals)

A

Its the study of NHA with the intebtion of making generalisations to humans e.g wire monkey

Bad because the monkeys regected tbeir own young, but was huge in understanding infant emotional development and could be used to improve the lives of captive animals

Q

Explain the talking point of ethological psychology (Non-human animals)

Q

Explain the talking point of use of animals as a therapeutic device (Non-human animals)

A

Research shows that pets reduce stress, e.g Allen = presence of pets

Animal assisted therapy (AAT) is also used to reach socialy isolated people, it begins with grooming, feeding, etc and then verbal interaction is encouraged, to help them transfer the skills to people

Q

Evaluate the talking point of the use of animals as a therapeutic device (AAT) (Non-human animals)

A

Research reviewed 28 studies which used AAT and found ALL showed benfical effects for problems like Scz and downs

However , sample sizes are limited, no control groups, not randomly allocated etc

Q

Explain speciesism (BPS guidelines for Psychologists working with animals)

A

Peter Singer argued that discrimination on the basis of membership of a species is no diff to racism, sexism etc, but Gray suggests we have a duty of care to humans

People like Regan (1984) argue that it is never ok to use animals (absolutist)
