Sclera Flashcards
(3 cards)
What is a staphyloma?
It is a localised bulging of a weak and thin outer tunic of the eyeball (cornea or sclera) lined by uveal tissue which shines through the thinned out fibrous coat.
What is episcleritis?
It is the benign inflammation of the episclera overlying the tenons capsule but not the underlying sclera.
Types of staphyloma?
Anterior staph.
Intercalary staph.- localised bulge of limbal area lined by root of iris. Due to ectasia of weak scar tissue formed at limbus following perf injury or peri corneal ulcer .
Ciliary staph. - lined by ciliary body. Due to thinning of sclera following perf injury, scleritis, glaucoma.
Equatorial staph. - bulge in sclera lined by choroid in equatorial region. Due to scleritis and degen of sclera in patho myopia.
Posterior staph.- bulge of sclera lined by choroid behind the equator. Due to patho myopia, post scleritis, perf injuries .
