▪ Approximately 25% of the entering freshman class chooses to live in one of these facilities

Housing Overview - University Housing

A

nd operated by the University.
▪ There are 24 undergraduate and 2 graduate residence halls on campus.
▪ 75% of first-year students live in University Housing undergraduate residence halls.
▪ Mostly double rooms (more singles for Upper-Division Students) with a variety of bathroom types based on location.
▪ Beginning fall 2024, 91% of University Housing space will be air-conditioned.
▪ Rooms furnished with XL twin beds depending on location, bed configurations vary. More
room furnishing information available on the housing website.
▪ Co-ed housing assignments arranged by towers, layered floors, by wing, by room and within
room. Barton-Lundgren and Busey-Evans are single gender buildings with one building in
each complex designated for women and men. There is a non-visitation SLO on one wing
within Busey Hall.

University Residence Hall Staff

A

Resident Advisor (RA) – A live-in, full-time returning student who plans floor activities connected
to our residential curriculum, helps students adjust to the University, assists students with
individual problems or roommate issues, refers to campus resources and ensures University
policies are followed.
Resident Director (RD) – A live-in, full-time professional staff member who oversees the administration
of each hall and supervises the RA staff. These staff are on call nights and weekends to assist with
resident emergencies

Selecting a Residence Hall

A

Housing is guaranteed for new First-year students.
Students who submit a University Housing online contract by the priority deadline, will receive an
e-mail with a specific Time Ticket which will specify the first available time you can go online and
choose your specific room in a University Residence Hall.
Time tickets will be awarded by a random lottery system to those who met the priority deadline.
All housing contracts completed by/before May 15th will have the same chances of receiving
an early time slot to select their residence hall room.
Students who contract after May 15 will be provided an assignment by Housing.
University Housing contract can be completed 48 hours after accepting your offer of admission, after your student email address is live.

Selecting a Roommate

A

First time attending students who would like to live with a friend, can request them during
the first part of the housing contract. If both students agree to be roommates prior to the May
15 priority deadline, they will receive the same time ticket to choose their respective space

Alma Mater
Sculpted by world-famous sculptor, and Illinois graduate, Lorado Taft ▪ The Illinois' Motto is "Learning and Labor," represented by the two figures on each side clasping hands; the Alma Mater welcomes her children with outstretched arms ▪ The inscription reads: “To thy happy children of the future, those of the past send greetings.” ▪ The Alma Mater is dressed up for special occasions—she held a basketball and wore a jersey and headband (similar to Dee Brown’s) when the Illini made the Final Four in 2005, she was decorated with roses when the football team made it to the Rose Bowl in 2008, and she has been seen wearing mittens and a stocking cap during harsh winter days Alma Cam- 24 hour stream of Alma shared on Youtube.

Eternal Flame
Myth says “A lovers kiss will bring eternal bliss”... in earlier days, according to the myth, if a couple kisses beneath the flame their love would be eternal. The current “flame” is now a light bulb that is sometimes turned off to save electricity, so if a couple kisses beneath the flame now they are likely to have an on and off relationship!

Lincoln Hall
Home to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Lincoln’s sculpture (1928) is just outside Lincoln Hall Theater, and rumor has it that rubbing his nose before exams brings luck – feel free to rub his if you want! In 1979, the bust of Lincoln was stolen and relocated to a tree stump on the Florida Avenue golf course. A note was sent to the DI "from Lincoln" saying "Went out for a breath of fresh air. I'll be back by the end of the week." Police got it back sooner than that!

Carl Woese Institute for Genomic Biology
Projects include developing improvements of photosynthesis funded by Bill Gates and research into the origins of life in the universe funded by NASA. “The Blobs” are sculptures that signify the child-like creativity of biologists The University of Illinois is the #1 recipient in National Science Foundation funding Research opportunities can be found in almost every major, not just science.

South Quad
Business Instructional Facility, to the West on Gregory Dr Can point out Architecture, David Kinley Hall (Political Science and Econ), Temple Buell Hall (Urban Planning), Mumford Hall (ACES) Mumford House (1870): The old white, prairie house on the South Quad, it’s the oldest structure still standing on campus. It was originally designed as a model farmhouse.

Campus Recreation Center East (CRCE)
One of two recreation centers on campus. The second being the Activities and Recreation Center About the ARC: (Three times larger than CRCE, at 340,000 square feet ▪ Has indoor track, weight room, indoor and outdoor pools, basketball / volleyball courts, rock climbing wall, sauna, squash, racquetball and handball courts, outdoor tennis courts, combat room, reflection room, group cycling room) About CRCE: (Holds locker rooms, multi-purpose gym, free weights, and aerobic fitness center ▪ Expanded in 2004 to include a pool, water slide, hot tub, indoor track and more. ▪ Cost of use is included as part of fees ▪ Intramural and Club Sports ● Club sports are competitive and have tryouts (like ice hockey) ● Intramural sports are relaxed, allowing you to get a group of friends together and play ● All games take place at ARC and CRCE or IM field)

McKinley Health Center (1925)
McKinley is the “official” campus health center ▪ All students taking 6+ credit hours pay a health service fee to access all of McKinley’s services which include primary care, mental health, women’s health and health education. ▪ There is a pharmacy, lab and radiology onsite. ▪ The Self Care Stations provide FREE over-the-counter self-care supplies. There are two main locations and four vending machines. ▪ McKinley’s Dial-A-Nurse is available 24/7 to answer any questions or coordinate healthcare needs.

Campus Safety
University Police patrol campus, along with the Champaign and Urbana Police Departments ▪ Student Bike or Walking Patrol of campus 9 PM - 2 AM ▪ Public Safety Building right on campus—campus police, etc. ▪ Emergency telephones throughout campus are connected to police stations immediately via intercom. Response time is 90 seconds! ▪ Safe Rides and Safe Walks programs provide transportation for students from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. approximately- exact hours change throughout year ▪ SafeRides is an MTD shuttle system to help give rides at night if there is not a bus available nearby ▪ SafeWalks is a program run by the UI Police, which provides a personal escort on campus if you have been studying late. Spurlock Museum
Open to the public six days a week (Closed Mondays) and admission is free. A second museum exists on the south side of campus- the Krannert Art Museum o This museum is 2nd largest in the state of Illinois, second to the Art Institute in Chicago Approximately 50,000 culture-related artifacts spanning 1,000,000 years and six continents.
