SCT Test 2 Video Notes Flashcards

1
Q

What’s the advantage to using scientific notation when working with millions, billions, and trillions?

A

You don’t have to write out all the zeros, which saves you a lot of time on an actual test.

Q

What is reflective symmetry?

A

When you draw a line through a shape and when both sides of the shape are folded along the line, they fall on each other perfectly (ex. a square, line of symmetry exactly in the middle)

Q

What is rotational symmetry?

A

When you place a point in a shape and if you rotate the shape around that center by 90° and 180°, you have the exact same shape.

Q

How to solve a question with a basic pattern and asks for a large transition (ex. pattern of black squares surrounded by white squares, 1 black square, 2 black squares, 3 black squares, and the question asks for 157 black squares)

A

Notice similarities in each of the patterns that don’t change no matter what, and apply that to the question. Try to create and equation and solve.

Q

How do you find an irrelevant research question?

A

use keywords and see if they match the question and use critical thinking to try and relate the question to the research; if checks out, then it is a relevant question

Q

When asked for a response to a question based on data, what should you do? (ex. I just heard in the news 18% of people have the flu. Do I really have the flu?)

A

Find the answer that relates the data provided in the question (ex. you have an 18% chance of having the flu)

Q

When asked what type of object a pattern approaches, what do you do?

A

Look at all the given objects in the pattern and she how it morphs over time, and compare these observations to the answer choices.

16
Q

How do you calculate net percentage change? (ex. a stock increased 10% in value the first year and decreased 20% in value the second year)

A

equation would be: x(1.1) because it starts at 100% and increases 10%, and loses 20% which leaves 80% remaining. 1.1 * 0.8 = 0.88, which is 88%. 100% - 88% = 12%, which means the stock decreased by 12%.
